My Organic and Natural Skin care Routine (Budget Friendly)

I have been completely natural with my skin care since 2014 and I have never looked back . My skin has improved so much since then as a result of the many changes I made towards a healthier lifestyle and how consistent I’ve been with it.  I get a lot of questions about my skin care and honestly people are usually surprised by my answer. However, There is a common myth I wish to address before going into why we are here. Natural Skin care Products cannot change your Complexion! It simply improves it. It tones you and tries to get you as much as you should be naturally. I hear people tell me that they got darker from using all natural products like Shea butter, Coconut oil etc.Listen! Odds are you might have used some sort of skin lighting products in the past and your skin is simply returning to its natural state. My complexion was actually darker in 2014 than it is now and my skin condition was just manageable if not bad.

I chose organic and natural products because they are  safe and effective.I figured if I can eat it, then I can use it on my body! Granted , It takes a bit of time before you see results but the pay off is worth it. . My skin care routine is broken into Four main parts. Let me break it down for you. They are Exfoliate, Cleanse, Treat and Moisturize .

Step 1: Exfoliate . (weekly)

This is the first step in my routine. I scrub my face with my DIY baking soda mix (baking soda not baking powder) or Sugar scrub mix. First, I Moisten face with water, making sure my skin is damp (never apply on dry skin)  before scrubbing gently in circular motions , unlocking the dead skin cells and dirt from my pores and then let it sit for some minutes for the nutrients contained in the ingredients to take effect before rinsing off with warm water.

DIY Baking Soda Recipe .

  • One spoon of baking Soda
  • Water
  • Half a teaspoon of honey*
  • Few drops of Olive oil.*
  • Half capful of Apple cider Vinegar.*

Sugar Scrub Recipe.

  • Half Spoon of finely strained or sieved sugar .
  • Two spoons of Olive oil or any essential oil of choice.
  • Half a teaspoon of honey.

Step 2: Cleanse.(weekly)

Once am done with exfoliation, I apply my homemade DIY Kaolin clay facial mask. Kaolin Clay is actually called Nzu in Igbo . (You are Welcome!). I love clay masks a lot. I use it for my hair as well. It deep cleanses and clarifies the skin while sucking out any remaining dirt/product/oil residues trapped in the pores . This clay mix does wonders for my skin. It tightens the pores, there by creating a really smooth surface and softer texture. It reduces blemishes, scars and keeps pimples at bay. I do this once a week. Frequent use can dry out your skin.

DIY Kaolin Clay Recipe.

  • One spoon of Kaolin Clay
  • half a teaspoon of turmeric.
  • Water to mix into a paste.
  • Few drops of Apple Cider Vinegar*
  • Few drops of Honey*
Never mix clay with metals , use rubber or ceramic plate and spoon. This ensures it’s potency.

Step 2b. (Daily)

After the facial mask, I cleanse my face with a mild moisturizing soap to further deep cleanse and remove any residue left from the earlier step. This is included in my everyday bath time of course. I alternate between  Dove Nutrim Moisture Liquid Soap and Dove  purely pampering Shea Butter beauty cream bar soap .( This is my absolute favorite and it smells amazing). One Liter of the liquid soap ranges from 1800 – 2500 Naira, while the bar soap retails for about 250 Naira only.

Step 3: Treat. (when needed)

I include this step when I notice or feel any pimple breakouts or get sunburns. I simple grab a leaf of fresh Aloe Vera plant and apply the gel to my face. It works amazing! I tell you. I let it sit on my face for a while before rinsing to get the greatest benefits from the plant. (I will have to talk about this more in another post). After this, I tone my face with my DIY Apple cider Vinegar mix . This balances the pH level of my skin, killing of bacteria, reducing discolorations, blemishes and scars etc . I simply moisten my cotton balls with it and apply.

Here’s more reasons why Apple Cider Vinegar is good for you!

DIY ACV Recipe:

  • Two caps of ACV.
  • One cup of water.

Step 4 : Moisturize . (Daily)

Moisturizing is one of the most underrated skin care aspect. Everybody needs moisture. It doesn’t matter if you have oily skin. You need moisture. I use my all time favorite raw organic and unrefined Shea butter to moisturize. I love this so much . Am actually one of the few people who likes the smell. Maybe , its as a result of long-term use, I don’t know. I find it therapeutic. It’s really normal to find me sniffing it. It is a non-greasy butter that won’t clog your pores and of course it’s so affordable. Shea butter has so many benefits it’s mind-blowing.( But that’s a  topic for another day) . I recently started using raw Cocoa butter as well. However, I use it on my body alone. I find that it’s too greasy for my face. It can be hard to find, especially if you don’t know where to look.

Coconut oil,raw Shea butter, Castor oil and raw Cocoa butter

I also have a DIY Shea butter mix that I came up with, I use it as my body butter and for my hair as well. It has really powerful blend of oils like coconut oil, castor oil, Argan oil etc that are super beneficial to the skin. I simply whisk all the ingredients together, enough to last me about a month and store in an air tight container.

Hope you found this post helpful? Let me know what you think as always. I leave you with love and light!

See ya!

  1. Hey there, really like your post.
I just wanted to find out how much water you put for the baking soda exfoliation step, is it a spoon/teaspoon; cup/few drops? It just says water. ?

    1. Hi Thandiwe, How much water you use depends entirely on the consistency you prefer. You might like it thick and creamy or otherwise.I like to alternate most times.

  2. I really love this. My mum has been using only Shea butter on her skin. I was really amazed seeing her after a long time. Her skin tone was just clean.
One thing is getting the original Shea butter so it doesn’t give an opposite of the expected result.
    Keep it up dear
